I’ve tutored students in the past with spectacular results. Here are 10 tips I recommend for making your tutoring as effective as possible.
- Know your audience.
What are your student’s strengths and weaknesses? What type of learner are they? Personalizing learning makes it much more effective.
- Be patient.
As a tutor, you can often get caught up in knowing the material and forget that your student is seeing it for the first time.
- Be positive!
Encourage a growth mindset and celebrate your students when they do well!
- Don’t show, guide.
Don’t pull out a whiteboard and do the problem. Walk your student through the problem.
- Teach the student to teach themselves.
The end goal is that your student will be able to continue tutoring themselves.
- Be confident.
You know your stuff, show it!
- Know your stuff!
Make sure you know your stuff by reviewing material beforehand.
- Be a good listener
Make your student feel like they can talk to you if they are confused.
- Stay organized.
Arrange your lesson plans and notes in advance so that they are easy to find for reference.
- Be flexible.
Know that your student might be feeling different on different days, and be ready to tailor the tutoring session to their needs.
