Learning about your heritage is very important because it gives you insight into your identity. Here are 5 steps you can take to learn more about your heritage.
- Spend time with relatives
Especially your grandparents! They have so many stories to tell. Ask them about their childhood, favorite foods, festivals that they love to celebrate, and the story of their immigration to the USA.
- Cook your culture’s food
Learn about the spices used and their origins. Different regions of a country are known for different cuisines. If you are short on time, simply visit restaurants in the area.
- Consume your culture’s media
Watch your culture’s TV and movies, and listen to its music. It takes you to a different world.
- Engage with the language
Learn to understand, read, write, and speak your language. Speaking is the easiest place to start, especially if you have relatives or friends that speak that language.
- Learn about mythology/religion
It’s fun to read about legends and the ancient history of your culture. Going to your temple, church, synagogue, mosque, etc. gives you peace and a sense of community.
Do these simple 5 things and you will find yourself having better awareness about yourself and your culture!
